Photography in the Online Archive of California

Archival holdings, including rich photographic resources, from the University of California, the California State Library, and numerous libraries and archival institutions throughout California are presented at the Online Archive of California. Finding aids, with or without online images, may be searched at the Online Archive of California, and  the digital images embedded in them may be searched via Calisphere. Many participating institutions also maintain their own access portals as well.

19th century photography, particularly in California and the American West, is especially strong in submissions from Berkeley's Bancroft Library (guides / digital images), the California State Library (guides / digital images), The Huntington Library (guides / digital images), the California Historical Society (guides / digital images), and the Society of California Pioneers (guides / digital images). Among the major photographers strongly represented  are California daguerreian operators such as Robert Vance, George Johnson, and William Shew, countless stereograph producers, and landscape photographers such as George R. Fardon, Carleton E. Watkins, Charles L. Weed, Lawrence & Houseworth, Eadweard J. Muybridge, and I.W. Taber.

Major 20th century photographic holdings are also present from most of these institutions, as well as UCLA Special Collections (guides / digital images),  the California Museum of Photography at UC Riverside (guides / digital images), and UC Santa Cruz (guides / digital images) plus content from many more repositories around the state. 20th century photography includes the work of greats such as Dorothea Lange (and other FSA and WRA photographers), Ansel Adams, Johan Hagemeyer, the Keystone Mast company, Ruth-Marion Baruch and Pirkle Jones, and Thérèse Bonney. Large archives of photojournalism are also found, including the archives of the San Francisco Examiner (at Bancroft Library) and the Los Angeles Times (at UCLA), among many others.
