Archive 192: Abstract Photographs by Women
Curated by Chloe Coleman, Emily Hauver, Beth Saunders, and Louie Palu
Albin O. Kuhn Library Gallery, University of Maryland Baltimore County
February 10 - May 31, 2025
This exhibition presents a selection of objects from Archive 192, an independent archive dedicated to preserving and celebrating abstractionist works by women photographers. The prints on view survey the array of photographic processes and diverse techniques of abstraction employed by photographers over the past century. Related ephemera, including publications, artist books, and posters document the evolution of abstractionism in photography and political movements that impact women working within the medium. Archive 192 was founded by photographer and filmmaker Louie Palu, who was later joined by his wife Chloe Coleman in expanding the project to its current state. 192 is a play on the numbers 291, which is a symbolic reference to Gallery 291 and the narrative related to the history of photography.
