Lynne Cohen: Observatories/Laboratories
Lynne Cohen
Editors: Florian Ebner & Matthias Pfaller
Published on the occasion of the artist’s exhibition at the Centre Pompidou, this book presents photographs from the period when Cohen switched from printmaking and sculpture to photography, combining the lessons of Minimalism, Pop Art and Conceptual Art with the documentary tradition of photographers, such as Eugene Atget and Walker Evans. The selection of images reflects her systematic approach to various themes of everyday life, which in Cohen’s practice and in the sequence of the book blend into each other.
Presented in a large format and in the form of an atlas of the photographer at work, the book assembles a previously unpublished quantity of images from the first two decades of Cohen’s photographic oeuvre. It zooms in on Cohen’s photographic strategies and conceptual rigor in portraying a wide range of locations in the United States, Canada, and Europe. The accompanying essays contextualize her work in contemporary discourses of art and photography. Particular attention is paid to her reception in France, where Cohen showed her work as early as 1978 and realized important exhibitions and monographs. Through its thematic focus and new research, this book pays tribute to Lynne Cohen’s contribution to the recent history of photography.
